Even if my guilt is such that without the queen’s benignity and clemency I would have absolutely no hope of finding forgiveness nor asking for remission, I nevertheless place myself in God’s hands, as I now know and confess my lack of prudence, for which I deserve a severe punishment. For I listened to those who, at that time, seemed wise not only to me but also to a great part of this Kingdom, and who now, to my detriment and theirs, and to the shame and blame of everyone, made known, with such a shameless audacity, the blameworthy and degrading deed that they had given someone what was not hers. I should not have accepted it (for which I blush and feel a just and reasonable shame to ask forgiveness for such a crime). I know that and without Her Majesty’s tremendous mercy and infinite clemency and without it being known that I am not entirely responsible for the mistake I am accused of, there would not be a lot of reasons for me to conceive any hope.
